Master of Puppets is the third album by American thrash metal band Metallica, released by Elektra Records in March 1986 (see 1986 in music) in North America. The album reached number twenty-nine on the U.S. Billboard 200, and has to date sold over six million copies in U.S. alone. It was the last album the band recorded with bass player Cliff Burton and is considered a landmark in the history of heavy metal. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Master of Puppets at number 167 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, while Time named it one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. Another list compiled by Metal-Rules of the top 100 metal albums placed it at number one as did IGN's list of the top 25 metal albums.

Historical significance

When it was released, Master of Puppets provided many metal fans with an alternate image to the commercially visible glam metal sounds of the era (e.g., Poison, Mötley Crüe, and Quiet Riot) - it sold over half a million copies at its time of release without any major video/radio airplay, making it the band's first record to be certified Gold by the RIAA. The album is often credited for innovating thrash metal, while also frequently being tagged by critics as "one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time".

The band's line-up during the album's recording was James Hetfield (vocals, guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Kirk Hammett (lead guitar), and the late Cliff Burton (bass). The album is remembered in part due to the death of Burton shortly after the release of the album in a bus accident while supporting the album on tour.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its release, Metallica played the album in its entirety on their Escape from the Studio '06 tour and at the Download '06 festival on 10 June. These concerts included the first-ever complete performances of the instrumental "Orion" (though the song's lengthy middle section had been performed at various times as part of instrumental medleys and bass solos since the early 1990s). The title track was ranked Number 51 in the "The Greatest Guitar Solos" from Guitar World. In 2006, the album was voted the fourth "greatest guitar album of all time" in Guitar World. And the April 5 edition of Kerrang! was dedicated to it, providing readers with the cover album Master of Puppets: Remastered.

In March 2007, the guitar magazine Total Guitar ranked the 100 greatest riffs of all time. The main riff in Master of Puppets was ranked as number one of the top 100.

Innovation

With Master of Puppets, Metallica innovated the thrash metal scene by adding a high level of complexity to the songs, melodic sounds (most notably in "Battery", "Master of Puppets" and "Orion") that showed some similarities with power metal and progressive metal, playing an important role for the later post-thrash creation. The lyrics deal with the same type of social commentary common in thrash, but took them to new heights. They dealt with subjects such as war, drug abuse and politics. The melodies and intricate guitar and bass riffs that can be heard often reflect the lyrics, and many of the riffs are heavily influenced by classical music, particularly the tempo and solos.

The album cover, by Don Brautigam, is a reference to the title track and to "Disposable Heroes".

Kill 'Em All is American Thrash metal band Metallica's debut album, released on July 25, 1983 on Megaforce Records.

Impact

Released in 1983, the record's release set the band on the path to "world domination", as drummer Lars Ulrich would put it in the following year.

According to some music critics the album is acclaimed for combining high-tempo (discounting the Cliff Burton bass solo "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth") and a tribute to the band's early influences: Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, Motörhead and Venom, all English bands who combined the heaviness and technicality of Black Sabbath with the speed and aggression of punk rock.

The Mustaine factor

When Metallica settled on a lineup originally, the band featured James Hetfield (guitar/vocals), Lars Ulrich (drums), Ron McGovney (bass) and Dave Mustaine (lead guitar). Due to tensions between McGovney and Mustaine, McGovney left the band. Castro Valley-born bassist Cliff Burton was recruited as a replacement.

There was also considerable tension between Mustaine and the rest of the band (particularly Hetfield), which resulted in him being fired in early 1983, just prior to the recording of Kill 'Em All - he went on to form the band Megadeth, who also achieved multi-million selling success. After Mustaine's departure, Metallica recruited Kirk Hammett, Exodus guitarist and one-time student of guitar legend Joe Satriani, and the band started recording Kill 'Em All with him barely a month after joining.

Mustaine and Hetfield had personal conflicts, with Mustaine later blaming the rivalry on the fact that "there was too much personality" in the band . These tensions led to a fist-fight that broke out between Mustaine and Hetfield, after Mustaine accused Hetfield of kicking his dog. Hetfield and Ulrich stated that they fired Dave because of his alcohol problem. Mustaine initially denied this, and in Metallica's 2004 movie Some Kind of Monster, Mustaine stated that he wished Metallica told him to go to AA.

Despite their differences, Mustaine's contribution to the early years of Metallica was not neglected as he received four co-writing credits on Kill 'Em All. One song, "The Four Horsemen" was originally written by Mustaine and titled "The Mechanix". It was performed at many early Metallica shows. Following Mustaine's exit, Hammett added a mid-paced, melodic middle section. Hetfield also wrote new lyrics and the band renamed it The Four Horsemen. Mustaine kept the faster paced original version of the song, renamed it simply "Mechanix", and included it on the first Megadeth album, Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!. Mustaine's other writing credits on Kill 'Em All are for the songs "Jump in the Fire", "Phantom Lord" and "Metal Militia".

Load is the sixth album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released in June 1996.

The album marked the band's return to the musical landscape, approximately five years after the release of their international smash success Metallica (commonly referred to as The Black Album). Load saw the band embrace a collective sound and identity far removed from their thrash metal roots. As with previous releases, the fourteen songs that would eventually comprise the album began as rough demos created by principal songwriters James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich in Ulrich's basement recording studio, "The Dungeon." The band took over 30 demos into The Plant Studios in the spring of 1995 where they would work for approximately the next year. Once again, Metallica teamed up with famed producer Bob Rock, who had been at the helm during the recording process for Metallica.

The songwriting dispenses almost entirely with the thrash metal style that characterized the band's sound in the 1980s. In place of staccato riffs, Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammet experimented with more blues based tones and styles. Additionally, Ulrich adopted a minimalist approach to his drum recording, abandoning the speed and complex double bass patterns of previous albums. Hetfield displayed a lyrical evolution as well, writing what many feel to be his most personal and introspective lyrics. "Until it Sleeps", the album's lead single, addressed his father's losing battle with cancer, while "Mama Said" explored his relationship with his mother. All of this marked a departure from the political and social overtones of albums like ...And Justice for All and Master of Puppets.

The album also marked the first appearance of a new Metallica logo, rounding off the stabbing edges of the first and last letters of the band's earlier 1980s logo. The M from the original logo was used to make a shaken-like symbol which was used as an alternate logo on this and future albums as well as other related artwork. The album featured an expansive booklet which contained many photos of the band. The booklet only contained select lyrics from each song in contrast to Metallica's previous studio albums which included complete song lyrics. Additionally, the interior artwork revolved around images of inkblots, a theme which would carry over to ReLoad and the covers for the singles released from the two albums.

The cover of the album is original artwork entitled "Semen and Blood III". It is one of three photographic studies by Andres Serrano created in 1990 by mingling the artist's own semen and bovine blood between two sheets of Plexiglas.

This was the only Metallica studio album where the bass player did not share a writing credit, as well as the longest studio album, clocking in at 78:59. (If it had run any longer, it wouldn't have played without potentially skipping.)

THE MECHANIX

Imagine you were at my station
And you brought your motor to me
Your a burner yeah a real motor car
Said you wanna get your order filled
Made me shiver when i put it in
Pumping just won't do ya know luckily for you
Who ever thought you'd be better
At turning a screw than me
I do it for my life
Made my drive shaft crank
Made my pistons buldge
Made my ball bearings melt from the heat
We were shifting hard when we took off
Put tonight all four on the floor
When we hit top end ya know it feels too slow
I'm giving you my room service
And ya know it's more than enough
Oh one more time ya know i'm in love

MINUS HUMAN

Don't you leave me Father Time
Take me with you
Tell me does your sun still shine
Come squeeze the world and drip it down my throat...oh yeah
Down my throat again....woooah

You got to breathe man, breathe!
Coming up for Air
Breathe man, breathe!
Coming up for Air

Touch me so I think I'm here
Skin my senses
Barely breathing
Minus Human
Please squeeze the world and drip it down my throat again
Down my throat again.....woooah

You got to breathe man, breathe!
Coming up for Air
Breathe man, breathe!
Coming up for Air

You got to breathe man, breathe!
Coming up for Air
Breathe man, breathe!
Coming up for!

No Leaf Clover
And it feels right this time
On this crash course we're in the big time
Pay no mind to the distant thunder
Beauty fills his head with wonder, boy....

Says it feels right this time
Turn around, found new high lights
Good day to be alive Sir
Good day to be alive, he said.....

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
is just a freight train coming your way
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
is just the freight train coming your way

Don't it feel right like this
All the pieces fall to his wish
Suck up for that quick reward boy
Suck up for that quick reward they said.....

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
is just a freight train coming your way
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
is just the freight train coming your way......
It's coming your way
It's coming your way......
Here comes

Yeah, Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel
Is just a freight train coming your way.... Yeah...
Then it comes to be, Yeah...
Then it comes to be, Yeah...
Then it comes to be, Yeah...
Then it comes to be, Yeah...
Then it comes to be, Yeah...
Then it comes to be, Yeah...
Then it comes to be, Yeah...
Then it comes to be, Yeah

Fuel for fire (Fuel demo)

This is a pre-release demo type thing of Fuel called `Fuel for Fire`, it sounds just like fuel, but the vocal track has been replaced with some older lyrics. This includes completely different verses from the final version. This version is available on some of the Fuel singles

Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire!
Turn on the dynamo, into the wild I go,
No other place I know, I know.
Turn on I see red,
Warhorse, Warhead,
Throttle up for speed ahead, yeah ahead.

CHORUS:
Ooooh, on I burn,
Fuel these pumping engines,
Burning hard, loose and clean,
And on I burn, turning my direction,
Quench my thirst with gasoline.

Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire,
Can't fight the need for speed,
I'm loose, I'm clean, I'm burning lean and mean, and mean.
Ignite the open trail,
Excite, exhale, comin' on, hot from hell, yeah hot from hell.

CHORUS

Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire,
Oooh, yeah-heh.

SOLO1
On I burn!
SOLO2

On, and on, and on..
Give me fuel,
On, and on, and on..
Give me fire,
On, and on, and on..
My desire,
On, and on, and on..

CHORUS

Gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme that which I desire!
FUEL!

Kill/Ride Medley

This is a live version of several songs made into one. You can find this on some of the "Until it sleeps" singles. Metallica used to play this medley live in 1996 and 1997

Ride the Lightning
Guilty as charged
But damn it, ain’t right
There is someone else controlling me
Death in the air
Strapped in the electric chair
This can’t be happening to me
Who made you God to say
“I’ll take your life from you!”

Flash before my eyes
Now it’s time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flames

No Remorse
No mercy for what we are doing
No thought to even what we have done
We don’t need to feel the sorrow
No remorse for the helpless one

War without end
No remorse No repent
We don’t care what it meant
Another day Another death
Another sorrow Another breath
No remorse No repent
We don’t care what it meant
Another day Another death
Another sorrow Another breath

Hit the Lights
No life till leather
We are gonna kick some ass tonight
We got the metal madness
When our fans start screaming
It’s right well all right
When we start to rock
We never want to stop again

Hit the lights
Hit the lights
Hit the lights

You know our fans are insane
We are gonna blow this place away
With volume higher
Than anything today the only way
When we start to rock
We never want to stop again

Hit the lights
Hit the lights
Hit the lights

The Four Horsemen
Time
Has taken its toll on you
The lines that crack you face
Famine
Your body it has torn through
Withered in every place
Pestilence
For what you have had to endure
And what you have put others through
Death deliverance for you for sure
There is nothing you can do

Phantom Lord
Sound is ripping through your ears
The deafening waiting for his whips
The taste of leather on you lips
Your bodies waiting for his whips
The taste of leather on you lips

Hear the cry of War
Louder than before
With this sword in hand
To control the land
Crushing metal strikes
On this frightening night
Fall onto your knees
For the Phantom Lord

Victims falling under chains
Your hear them crying death pains
The fists of terrors breaking through
Now there’s nothing you can do

Hear the cry of War
Louder than before
With this sword in hand
To control the land
Crushing metal strikes
On this frightening night
Fall onto your knees
For the Phantom Lord

Fight Fire with Fire
Soon to fill our lungs the hot winds of death
The gods are laughing, so take your last breath

Fight fire with fire
Ending is near
Fight fire with fire
Bursting with fear
Fight fire with fire (repeat)
I Disappear

Hey Hey Hey
Here I go now
Here I go into new days
Hey Hey Hey
Here I go now
Here I go into new days
I’m pain, I’m hope, I’m suffer
Yeah Hey Hey Hey Yeah Yeah
Here I go into new days

Hey Hey Hey
Ain’t no mercy
Ain’t no mercy there for me
Hey Hey Hey
Ain’t no mercy
Ain’t no mercy there for me
I’m pain, I’m hope, I’m suffer
Yeah, Yeah, Hey, Hey no mercy
Ain’t no mercy there for me

Do you bury me when I’m gone
Do you teach me while I’m here
Just as soon as I belong
Then it’s time I disappear

And I went on down that road
Hey Hey Hey
And I went on
And I went on down that road
I’m pain, I’m hope, I’m suffer
Hey Hey Hey Yeah And I went on
And I went on down that road

Do you bury me when I’m gone
Do you teach me while I’m here
Just as soon as I belong
Then it’s time I disappear

Do you bury me when I’m gone
Do you teach me while I’m here
Just as soon as I belong
Then it’s time I disappear
DIS-A-PPEAR HUH!!!

SOLO

Screaming in the background:
I’m gone I’m gone
I’m gone
Oh yeah I’m gone
I’m gone
I’m gone baby
I’m gone I’m gone

Do you bury me when I’m gone
Do you teach me while I’m here

KENNY GOES TO HELL
Lyrics to "Kenny goes to hell" the south park song that James sings on

Little boy, you're going to hell!
You said bad words, threw rocks at the bird
And now, this is your hotel!
You ain't going back, this ain't disneyland, it's HELL!

Little boy, it's time for you to pay!
For hurting that bird, and not going to church
And staring at boobs everyday
Now you must stand in HELL!

Hell isn't good, Hell isn't good, HELL!
No, Hell isn't good, Hell isn't good, HELL!

Adolf Hitler: Something in german..
George Burns: Hey fuckface, have you seen Gracie?
Mahatma Ghandi: There is orderliness the universe
Hell isn't good, Hell isn't good, HELL!

ReLoad is the seventh album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released in 1997. The album consists of material originally written during the writing sessions for the band's previous album, Load. Indeed, Metallica had initially hoped to release the Load & ReLoad songs as a double album, but that idea proved untenable for a variety of reasons. Aside from the album title, ReLoad also shares similar artwork with Load (both use pictures from Andres Serrano's Blood and Semen series) and a similarly distinctive blues-rock feel in many of the songs.

The cover of the album is original artwork depicting urine and blood. It is one of three photographic studies by Andres Serrano created in 1990 by mingling the artist's own urine and bovine blood between two sheets of Plexiglas. As with Load, ReLoad included a booklet containing band photos and select lyrics for each song.

Ride the Lightning is American thrash metal band Metallica's second album, released in August 1984 on Elektra Records.

Impact and Acclaim

Ride the Lightning is often hailed by fans as a classic of the thrash metal genre, and a vital bridge between the band's albums, Kill 'Em All and Master of Puppets, pushing the thrash metal of the debut into progressive territory more fully-realized on Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All.

Ride the Lightning retains the speed of Kill 'Em All on songs like "Trapped Under Ice" and "Fight Fire with Fire", but also contains the first of Metallica's longer, more symphonically arranged tracks, such as "Fade to Black" and the nearly 9-minute closing instrumental "The Call of Ktulu".

Ride the Lightning is considered the first of the "unofficial trilogy" of Metallica albums that show obvious similarities in concept. The "trilogy" is considered instrumental in making metal more serious and focused on real issues, and are Metallica's most respected works.

Ride the Lightning was listed at number 3 in a list compiled by metal-rules.com of a list of the Top 100 Metal Albums of All Time and number 5 by IGN Music on the Top 25 Metal Albums.

Track listing

1. "Fight Fire with Fire" (James Hetfield, Cliff Burton, Lars Ulrich) – 4:44

4. "Fade to Black" (Kirk Hammett, Hetfield, Burton, Ulrich) – 6:56
5. "Trapped Under Ice" (Hammett, Hetfield, Ulrich) – 4:03
6. "Escape" (Hammett, Hetfield, Ulrich) – 4:23
7. "Creeping Death" (Hammett, Hetfield, Burton, Ulrich) – 6:36
8. "The Call of Ktulu" (Mustaine, Hetfield, Burton, Ulrich) – 8:52

This was the final album to feature songs co-written by Dave Mustaine (who was kicked out of the band prior to the recording of Kill 'Em All.)

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" was released as a promo single, with two versions of the song, an edited version on side A, and the album version on side B.

St. Anger is the eighth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on June 5, 2003 (see 2003 in music). The album was originally to be released on June 10, 2003, but because of fears of extended music piracy over filesharing networks , St. Anger was released five days earlier. The album hit number 1 in 30 countries, including the U.S. Billboard 200 and Canadian Albums Chart. Sales did not remain stable in the US, however, with the album selling only two million copies, the band's lowest-selling album there. In 2004 lead single "St. Anger" earned a Grammy Award for "Best Metal Performance".

St. Anger represents the last collaboration between Metallica and their longtime producer Bob Rock, with the announcement in early 2006 that Rick Rubin would assume production duties on their forthcoming album.

History and reception

Five and a half years elapsed between the release of the band's previous studio album, ReLoad, and the recording of St. Anger, which began in 2002. Many factors contributed to this delay, including the departure of bassist Jason Newsted, the band's feud with file-sharing service Napster, and vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield's several months in rehab for alcoholism and other unspecified substance abuse. The film Some Kind of Monster documents that relationships between the band members in the lead-up to the album's recording were at an all-time low.

The band began initial writing for the album in April 2001, when they rented out and converted an army barrack in The Presidio in San Francisco, California, into a makeshift studio. Uncomfortable with the idea of bringing in an immediate replacement for Newsted, the band opted to have producer Bob Rock play bass guitar for the recording of the album, with plans to find a fulltime bass player upon the record's completion. Recording came to a halt in July 2001 when the band announced via its website that James Hetfield had entered a rehab center for treatment of alcoholism and other addictions. Prior to the album's release, Lars Ulrich would leave videos and audio of himself discussing the new album on the band's blog, jumpinthestudio.com (no longer working).

The album met mixed reviews. Fans posting on an online website devoted to heavy metal considered the album a disaster . One review stated that the album was unpolished and seemed under-produced. The band adopted a different approach to the recording process, opting for an extremely stripped down and raw production quality. Producer Bob Rock noted that the aim was to capture the atmosphere of a band jamming together in a garage for the first time and the band just happened to be Metallica. Drum rattles gave listeners a challenging sound, different from previous Metallica albums and unheard of from such an established act. The album also had a complete absence of guitar solos. Some critics praised the album for its aggression, with one critic noting that "while it's an ungodly mess at times", "what you hear on this album is a band playing with the passion for the first time in years". Longtime artist Pushead designed the cover artwork, marking the first album cover he'd done for the band, although his work had been featured previously inside the ...And Justice For All booklet, several single covers, and numerous T-shirt designs.

After Summer Sanitarium, the year-long Madly in Anger with the World Tour followed, finishing near the end of 2004. The songs "Frantic", "St. Anger", "Dirty Window", and "The Unnamed Feeling" were performed frequently during the tour. "Sweet Amber" and "Some Kind of Monster" were also played live, but not as often as the other St.Anger material. The album tracks were altered when played live. Sometimes shortened, or in some cases a guitar solo was added ("Sweet Amber", "Dirty Window", "Frantic") However, in some cases only one song from the album was played live, and in 2006 the album had almost completely been removed from live sets with most shows not including any songs from St. Anger, Load or ReLoad (with the exception of Fuel from ReLoad).

In May 2007, the album was featured in Q magazines "10 Most Insane Albums Ever"; due to James Hetfield's recording hours, alcohol problems and the departure of Jason Newsted, then underneath a section of the article with the heading: "Is It Any Good?"; it says the production is "tinny" and that the songs "just aren't good enough" and says that Hetfield's singing is out of key.

A film called Some Kind of Monster was released after St. Anger which recorded the production of the album, offering insight into how the band produced the music and how they got along during its creation.

It includes newly recorded cover versions of other artists' songs, all of their b-side covers released up to that point, and the entire Garage Days Re-Revisited EP, which had gone out of print since its original release in 1987. The title is a portmanteau of Garage Days Re-Revisited and their song Damage, Inc.

..And Justice for All is American heavy metal band Metallica's fourth studio album released August 25, 1988, by Elektra Records. It is the first studio album to feature bassist Jason Newsted and without former bassist Cliff Burton, due to his death in September of 1986. The front cover depicts the statue of Lady Justice cracked and bound by ropes, with one of her scales filled with dollars and one of her breasts exposed. The words '...And Justice For All' are graffitied to her right.

History

The final album in the loose trilogy of Metallica albums that includes Ride the Lightning (1984) and Master of Puppets (1986), ...And Justice for All, is the most musically complex of the band's classic thrash metal in the 1980s. For many fans and rock critics, the album is the end product of the evolution of Metallica and stands as the apex of the band's development of the thrash metal style. Like those of previous albums, the lyrics on ...And Justice for All discuss politics and social issues; however, lyricist James Hetfield is more direct than ever before in his views. At the same time, and despite Hetfield's aggressive singing style, the lyrics refrain from overt confrontation or ringing calls for revolutionary change. Instead, as drummer Lars Ulrich explained it, the ideas expressed in the lyrics merely represented "interests"1 of the band, and were meant largely to be "documentary"2 in nature.

...And Justice for All continues the development of the modular song structure so characteristic of thrash metal. Like those on Master of Puppets, the songs on this album are long and have many different, unique riffs, particularly during the middle (or bridge) sections. Furthermore, the actual production of the album marks an important development in the recorded history of metal for its clean and crisp atmosphere. Ulrich's kick drums don't "thud" so much as "click" (by boosting the higher frequencies and/or by using a coin (e.g., a New Zealand 50 cent coin taped to the bass drum for when the beater head hits, providing the "Metallica click;" this will provide the sound but damage the drum skin quickly), while Hetfield's guitar timbre is processed by a complex equalisation scheme that dials out almost any sense of mid-range frequencies, while boosting portions of the treble & low bass frequencies. And, in one of the more famous of Hetfield and Ulrich's controversies with bassist Jason Newsted, the album's production almost completely lacks identifiable bass guitar (although a remixed version with bass added has been circulating around peer-to-peer networks). The standard explanation for this combines Newsted's absence from the mixing sessions (where he might have asserted his opinion) and the lingering issue of his "newness" within the band following the tragic death of Cliff Burton in September 1986.

As said by the band in their magazine SO WHAT!, they wish that they could re-mix the entire album because the drums and guitar overpower the bass completely. Some believe this is because Jason Newsted was new to the band and they wanted to frustrate him, though many, including Newsted himself, have stated this is due to the bass lines copying the rhythm guitar parts too closely.

Unusual production aside, ...And Justice for All was Metallica's breakout album and reached No. 6 in the Billboard charts. Though it would soon be over-shadowed commercially by the band's following album (1991's Metallica, aka "The Black Album"), this album nevertheless confirmed Metallica's large-scale arena status.

The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance in 1989, but with much controversy, it lost to Jethro Tull's Crest of a Knave. In 2007, the win was named one of the 10 biggest upsets in Grammy history by Entertainment Weekly.

"One" was Metallica's first music video and incited much controversy among Metallica fans, who had valued the band's apparent opposition to MTV and other forms of obvious commercial metal.

In 1990, "One" received the first-ever Grammy award for Best Metal Performance, as well as being Metallica's first Grammy award.

The album was ranked at number nine in IGN's Top 25 Metal Albums.

The album continues the trend of previous albums Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets with a fast heavy song as the first track, the title track as the second track, a fast ending complex ballad as the fourth track and having a lengthy instrumental among the last tracks.

Live performance

The song structures on ...And Justice for All were so complex that the band apparently had some difficulty reproducing the songs precisely for their Damaged Justice tour shows. The band stated many times in subsequent years that this kind of difficulty was the primary reason for the relatively simpler song structures on their next album, Metallica. Hammett said: "One day after we played 'Justice' and got off the stage one of us said, 'we're never fucking playing that song again.'" On June 28, 2007, Metallica played the title track for the first time since October 1989, nearly 18 years ago in Lisbon, Portugal on the first show of their Sick of the Studio '07 tour and have made it a set-fixture for the remainder of that routing.

In spite of this, the song "One" quickly gained a permanent fixture in the band's live playlist since the release of the album.

Metallica played "The Shortest Straw" live for the first time on this tour. This was performed at Castle Farms in Charlevoix Michigan.

To date, "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" and "To Live Is to Die" remain the only songs that have never been performed live in their entirety. Instead, the band played segments of them during solos or impromptu jams.

As of the group's 2003–2004 Madly in Anger with the World Tour, many of the songs from the album have begun to appear in the group's live performances, with in particular "Dyers Eve" making its live debut.

Creeping Death

Slaves
Hebrews born to serve, to the pharaoh
Heed
To his every word, live in fear
Faith
Of the unknown one, the deliverer
Wait
Something must be done, four hundred years

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

Now
Let my people go, land of goshen
Go
I will be with thee, bush of fire
Blood
Running red and strong, down the Nile
Plague
Darkness three days long, hail to fire

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first born man
Die by my hand
I creep across the land
Killing first born man

I
Rule the midnight air the destroyer
Born
I shall soon be there, deadly mass
I
Creep the steps and flood final darkness
Blood
Lambs blood painted door, I shall pass

So let it be written
So let it be done
I'm sent here by the chosen one
So let it be written
So let it be done
To kill the first born pharaoh son
I'm creeping death

Album : "Ride The Lightning" - Escape 1984

Escape

Feel no pain, but my life ain't easy
I know I'm my best friend
No one cares, but I'm so much stronger
I'll fight until the end
To escape from the true false world
Undamaged destiny
Can't get caught in the endless circle
Ring of stupidity

Out of my own, out to be free
One with my mind, they just can't see
No need to hear things that they say
Life is for my own to live my own way

Rape my mind and destroy my feelings
Don't tell my what to do
I don't care now, 'cause I'm on my side
And I can see through you
Feed my brain with your so called standards
Who says that I ain't right
Break away from your common fashion
See through your blurry sight

Out of my own, out to be free
One with my mind, they just can't see
No need to hear things that they say
Life is for my own to live my own way

See they try to bring the hammer down
No damn chains can hold me to the ground
Life is for my own to live my own way

Album : "Ride The Lightning" - Trapped Under Ice 1984

Trapped Under Ice

I don't know how to live trough this hell
Woken up, I'm still locked in this shell
Frozen soul, frozen down to the core
Break the ice, I can't take anymore

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under the ice

Crystallized, as I lay here and rest
Eyes of glass stare directly at death
From deep sleep I have broken away
No one knows, no one hears what I say

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under the ice

Scream from my soul
Fate, mystified
Hell, forever more
No release from my cryonic state
What is this? I've been stricken by fate
Wrapped up tight, cannot move, can't break free
Hand of doom has a tight grip on me

Freezing
Can't move at all
Screaming
Can't hear my call
I am dying to live
Cry out
I'm trapped under the ice

Album : "Ride The Lightning" - Fade To Black 1984

Fade To Black

Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things are not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filing me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now He's gone

No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death Greets me warm, now I will just say good-bye

Album : "Ride The Lightning" - For Whom The Bell Tolls 1984

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Make his fight on the hill in the early day
Constant chill deep inside
Sounding gun, on they run through the endless grey
On the fight, for they are right, yes, by who's to say?
For a hill men would kill, why? They do not know
Suffered wounds test there their pride
Men of five, still alive through the raging glow
Gone insane from the pain that they surely know

For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

Take a look to the sky just before you die
It is the last time you will
Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they will see what will be, blinded eyes to see

For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

Album : "Ride The Lightning" - Ride The Lightning 1984

Ride The Lightning

Guilty as charged
But damn it, it ain't right
There is someone else controlling me
Death in the air
Strapped in the electric chair
This can't be happening to me
Who made you God to say
"I'll take your life from you!"

[chorus:]

Flash before my eyes
Now it's time to die
Burning in my brain
I can feel the flames

Wait for the sign
To flick the switch of death
It's the beginning of the end
Sweat, chilling cold
As I watch death unfold
Consciousness my only friend
My fingers grip with fear
What I am doing here?

[chorus:]

Someone help me
Oh please God help me
They are trying to take it all away
I don't want to die
Time moving slowly
The minutes seem like hours
The final curtain call I see
How true is this?
Just get it over with
If this is true, just let it be
Wakened by the horrid scream
Freed from the frightening dream

Album : "Ride The Lightning" - Fight Fire With Fire 1984

Fight Fire With Fire

Do unto others as they have done unto you
But what in the hell is this world coming to?
Blow the universe into nothingness
Nuclear warfare shall lay us to rest

[chorus:]

Fight fire with fire
Ending is near
Fight fire with fire
Bursting with fear
We all shall die

Time is like a fuse, short and burning fast
Armageddon is here, like said in the past

[chorus:]

Soon to fill our lungs the hot winds of death
The gods are laughing, so take your last breath

[chorus:]

Let us have peace, let us have life,
Let us escape the cruel night.
Let us have time, let the sun shine,
Let us beware the deadly sign.

The day is coming, armageddon's near,
Inferno's coming, can we survive the blitzkrieg.
The blitzkrieg, the blitzkrieg.

Save us from fate, save us from hate,
Save ourselves before it's too late.
Come to our need, hear our plea,
Save ourselves before the earth bleeds.

The day is dawning, the time is near,
Aliens calling, can we survive the blitzkrieg.

[ZOMBA MUSIC, 1982]
[Originally recorded by DIAMOND HEAD-1980]

[Metallica, originally performed by Diamond Head (Recorded in 1982)]
[- words and music by Brian Tatler and Sean Lindon Harris]

My mother was a witch, she was burned alive.
Thankless little bitch, for the tears I cried.
Take her down now, don't want to see her face
All blistered and burnt, can't hide my disgrace.

Twenty-seven, everyone was nice.
Gotta see 'em make 'em pay the price.
See their bodies out on the ice.
Take my time.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man, yes I am.

As I watched my mother die, I lost my head.
Revenge now I sought, to break with my bread.
Taking no chances, you come with me.
I'll split you to the bone, help set you free.

Twenty-seven, everyone was nice.
Gotta see 'em make 'em pay the price.
See their bodies out on the ice.
Take my time.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man, yes I am.

On with the action now, I'll strip your pride.
I'll spread your blood around, I'll see you ride.
Your face is scarred with steel, wounds deep and neat.
Like a double dozen before ya, smells so sweet.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man.

I'll make my residence, I'll watch your fire.
You can come with me, sweet desire.
My face is long forgot, my face not my own.
Sweet and timely whore, take me home.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man.

My soul is longing for, await my heir.
Sent to avenge my mother, sweep myself.
My face is long forgot, my face not my own.
Sweet and timely whore, take me home.

Am I evil? Yes I am.
Am I evil? I am man.

Am I evil? Yes I fucking am.
Am I evil? I am man, yeah.

Album : Kill 'em All" - Metal Militia 1983

Metal Militia

[James Hetfield]
[Lars Ulrich]
[D. Mustaine]

Thunder and lightning the gods take revenge
Senseless destruction
Victims of fury are cowardly now
Running for safety
Stabbing the harlot to pay for her sins
Leaving the virgin
Suicide running as if it were free
Ripping and tearing

On through the mist and the madness
We are trying to get the message to you
Metal Militia
Metal Militia
Metal Militia

Chained and shadowed to be left behind
nine and one thousand
Metal militia for your sacrifice
iron clad soldiers
Join or be conquered the law of the land
What will befall you
The metallization of your inner soul
twisting and turning

On through the mist and the madness
We are trying to get the message to you
Metal Militia
Metal Militia
Metal Militia

We are as one as we all are the same
fighting for one cause
Leather and metal are our uniforms
protecting what we are
Joining together to take on the world
with our heavy metal
Spreading the message to everyone here
Come let yourself go

On through the mist and the madness
We are trying to get the message to you
Metal Militia

Album : Kill 'em All" - Seek & Destroy 1983

Seek & Destroy

[James Hetfield]
[Lars Ulrich]

We are scanning the scene
in the city tonight
We are looking for you
to start up a fight
There is an evil feeling
in our brains
But it is nothing new
you know it drives us insane

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy

There is no escape
and that is for sure
This is the end we won't take any more
Say goodbye
to the world you live in
You have always been taking
but now you're giving

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy

Our brains are on fire
with the feeling to kill
And it won't go away
until our dreams are fulfilled
There is only one thing
on our minds
Don't try running away
`cause you're the one we will find

Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Running,
On our way
Hiding,
You will pay
Dying,
One thousand deaths
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy
Searching,
Seek and Destroy

Album : Kill 'em All" - No Remorse 1983

No Remorse

[James Hetfield]
[Lars Ulrich]

No mercy for what we are doing
No thought to even what we have done
We don't need to feel the sorrow
No remorse for the helpless one

War without end
No remorse No repent
We don't care what it meant
Another day Another death
Another sorrow Another breath
No remorse No repent
We don't care what it meant
Another day Another death
Another sorrow Another breath

Blood feeds the war machine
as it eats its way across the land
We don't need the feel the sorrow
No remorse is the one command

War without end
No remorse No repent
We don't care what it meant
Another day Another death
Another sorrow Another breath
No remorse No repent
We don't care what it meant
Another day Another death
Another sorrow Another breath

Only the strong survive
No one to save the weaker race
We are ready to kill all comers
Like a loaded gun right at your face

War without end
No remorse No repent
We don't care what it meant
Another day Another death
Another sorrow Another breath
No remorse No repent
We don't care what it meant
Another day Another death
Another sorrow Another breath

Attack
Bullets are flying
People are dying
with madness surrounding all hell's breaking loose
Soldiers are hounding
Bodies are mounting
cannons are shouting to take their abuse
With war machines going
Blood starts to flowing
No mercy given to anyone hear
The furious fighting
Swords are like lighting
It all becomes frightening to you
Know death is near
No remorse

Album : Kill 'em All" - Phantom Lord 1983

Phantom Lord

[James Hetfield]
[Lars Ulrich]
[D. Mustaine]

Sound is ripping through your ears
The deafening sound of metal nears
Your bodies waiting for his whips
The taste of leather on your lips

Hear the cry of War
Louder than before
With his sword in hand
to control the land
Crushing metal strikes
on this frightening night
Fall onto your knees
For the Phantom Lord

Victims falling under chains
You hear them crying dying pains
The fists of terrors breaking through
Now there's nothing you can do

Hear the cry of War
Louder than before
With his sword in hand
to control the land
Crushing metal strikes
on this frightening night
Fall onto your knees
For the Phantom Lord

The leather armies have prevailed
The Phantom Lord has never failed
Smoke is lifting from the ground
The rising volume metal sound

Hear the cry of War
Louder than before
With his sword in hand
to control the land
Crushing metal strikes
on this frightening night
Fall onto your knees
For the Phantom Lord

Fall to your knees
and bow to the PhantomLord

Album : Kill 'em All" - Whiplash 1983

Whiplash

[James Hetfield]
[Lars Ulrich]

Late at night all systems go
You have come to see the show
We do our best You're the rest
You make it real you know
There is a feeling deep inside
That drives you fuckin' mad
A feeling of a hammerhead
You need it oh so bad

Adrenaline starts to flow
You're thrashing all around
Acting like a maniac
Whiplash

Bang your head against the stage
Like you never did before
Make it ring Make it bleed
Make it really sore
In a frenzied madness
with your leather and your spikes
Heads are bobbing all around
It is hot as hell tonight

Adrenaline starts to flow
You're thrashing all around
Acting like a maniac
Whiplash

Here on the stage the Marshal noise
is piercing through your ears
It kicks your ass kick your face
Exploding feeling nears
Now is the time to let it rip
To let it fuckin' loose
We are gathered here to be with you
Cause this is what we choose

Adrenaline starts to flow
You're thrashing all around
Acting like a maniac
Whiplash

The show is through the metal is gone
It is time to hit the road
Another town Another gig
Again we will explode
Hotel rooms and motorways
Life out here is raw
But we will never stop
We will never quit
cause we are Metallica

Adrenaline starts to flow
You're thrashing all around
Acting like a maniac

Album : Kill 'em All" - Jump In The Fire 1983

Jump In The Fire

[James Hetfield]
[Lars Ulrich]
[D. Mustaine]

Down in the depths of my fiery home
The summons bell will chime
Tempting you and all the earth
to join our sinful kind
There is a job to be done and I'm the one
You people make me do it
Now it is time for your fate and I won't hesitate
to pull you down into this pit

So come on
Jump in the Fire
So come on
Jump in the Fire

With hell in my eyes and with death in my veins
The end is closing in
Feeding on the minds of man
and from their souls within
My disciples all shout to search out
And they always shall obey
Follow me now my child not the meek or the mild
But do just as I say

So come on
Jump in the Fire
So come on
Jump in the Fire

Jump by your will or be taken by force
I'll get you either way
Trying to keep the hellfire lit
I am stalking you as prey
Living your life as me I am you you see
There is part of me in everyone
So reach down grab my hand walk with me through the land
Come home where you belong

So come on
Jump in the Fire
So come on
Jump in the Fire

Album : Kill 'em All" - Motorbreath 1983

Motorbreath

[James Hetfield]

Living and dying laughing and crying
Once you have seen it you will never be the same
Life in the fast lane is just how it seems
Hard and it's heavy, it's dirty and mean

Motorbreath
It's how I live my life
I can't take it any other way
Motorbreath
The sign of living fast
It is going to take
Your breath away

Don't stop for nothing it's full speed or nothing
I am taking down you know whatever is in my way
Getting your kicks as you are shooting the line
Sending the shivers up and down your spine

Motorbreath
It's how I live my life
I can't take it any other way
Motorbreath
The sign of living fast
It is going to take
Your breath away

Those people who tell you not to take chances
They are all missing on what life is about
You only live once so take hold of the chance
Don't end up like others the same song and dance

Motorbreath
It's how I live my life
I can't take it any other way
Motorbreath
The sign of living fast
It is going to take
Your breath away

Album : Kill 'em All" - The Four Horsemen 1983

The Four Horsemen

[James Hetfield]
[Lars Ulrich]
[D. Mustaine]

By the last breath of the fourth winds blow
Better raise your ears
The sound of hooves knocks at your door
Lock up your wife and children now
It's time to wield the blade
For now you have got some company

The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They have come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
or choose your fate and die

You have been dying since the day
You were born
You know it has all been planned
The quartet of deliverance rides
A sinner once a sinner twice
No need for confession now
Cause now you have got the fight of your life

The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They have come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
or choose your fate and die

Time
has taken its toll on you
The lines that crack your face
Famine
Your body it has torn through
Withered in every place
Pestilence
For what you have had to endure
And what you have put others through
Death
Deliverance for you for sure
There is nothing you can do

So gather round young warriors now
and saddle up your steeds
Killing scores with demon swords
Now is the death of doers of wrong
Swing the judgment hammer down
Safely inside armor blood guts and sweat

The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They have come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
or choose your fate and die
